loads of stuff if you Google it. Not sure otherwise. Try deleting your Firefox and Thunderbird folders (inc. program) before reinstalling.

Restart your computer before installing Thunderbird again, it's possible that the dll is still loaded in memory.

2: good idea.

If that doesn't work, you might want to scan your computer for virus and malware.

Did you delete the folder where Thunderbid was installed?

Mostly, I think, C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\

If you are using Firefox you will probably have to delete profiles/folders for that too, as I think both programs use the same DLL (which handles JavaScript)

when i tried to reinstall the old tbird 1.5 i get the following during installation
"error occurred during instalation - Cross platform COM : - 202 access denied"

Either admin rights, registry error (if using Windows) or malware, as Karolinger suggested. Other than that I'm stumped.

Not sure which A/V you use but might be worth downloading a trial of Kaspersky and scan using that. If no virus or malware it sounds like some files are knackered.
